If the days sever my ties with you,

I still maintain our bond with sincere affection.

I am content with honoring the old covenant,

and, for a visit, with the phantom that comes at night.

This, while I hold mourning rites for separation,

where composure and consolation desert me.

And I am reproached for lamenting my burning grief; rarely

does one parted find a compassionate companion.

Can my silence do away with complaint, when

the sighs of my beating heart lament burning grief?

Suppose I hold back my sigh and my tears—

what recourse have I, when the lump of composure chokes me?

I am like doves: when they moan, they give voice to their com-

plaint, though they have opened no speaker’s mouth to voice it.
