أظَلُّI remain بهاthrough them بعدafter المَماتِdeath مخلَّدَاimmortal
I shall spend my wealth in pursuit of noble deeds,
I will spend my abundance to gain virtues,
Through which I shall remain immortal after death.
With which I will be immortalized after death.
وأسعىand I hasten إلىtoward الهجاءِsatire (likely a slip for 'the fray') لاnot أرهبُI fear الرّدىdeath
ولاand not أتَخَشّىI fear عامِلاًa spear shaft ومهَنّدَاand an Indian-steel sword
And I hasten to the fray, unafraid of death,
And I will strive for glory, fearing no hardship,
Nor do I fear a spear or an Indian-steel sword,
Nor dreading a vengeful or spiteful foe.
بكلِّwith every فتىًyoung man يلقىmeets المنِيَّةَdeath ضاحِكاًlaughing
كأنَّas though لهfor him فيin القتلِbeing slain عَيشاًlife مُجَدَداrenewed
With every young man who meets death laughing,
With every youth who meets death with a smile,
As though in being slain he found life renewed.
As though to him death brings renewed life.
فإنso if نلتُI gain ماwhat أرجوI hope for فللجودِthen for generosity ثمَّthen ليfor me
وإنand if مِتُّI die خَلَّفتُI leave behind الثَّناءَpraise المؤَبَّداeverlasting
So if I gain what I hope for, it is for generosity, then for me;
If I gain what I hope for, it’s due to generosity,
And if I die, I shall leave behind everlasting praise.
And if I die I’ll leave behind enduring praise.
