أَحببتُهاI loved her فيin عُنفوانِthe prime of الصِّبَاyouth
وقلتُand I said إنَّthat الشيبَgray hair يُسلِينيmakes me forget
I loved her in the prime of youth,
In the prime of youth I loved her
and said that gray hair would make me forget her.
And said that old age would console me.
فزادنيso it increased in me شَيْبيmy gray hair جُنوناًmadness بهاfor her
حتّىuntil كأَنَّas though الشيبَgray hair يُغْرِيِنيtempts me
Yet my gray hair increased my madness for her,
But my old age has maddened me for her
until it seemed as though gray hair were tempting me.
As if old age were tempting me.
وكالشبابِand like youth الشَّيبُgray hair لاno مِيزةٌdistinction
بينهُماbetween the two of them عندَin the eyes of المجَانِينِmadmen
And gray hair is like youth: there is no distinction
There is no difference between youth and old age
between them in the eyes of madmen.
For the insane.
