وصبَرْتُ عنه والحشَا يَتَضرّمُ
How often I have grieved at separation from one I parted with,
How much I grieved for the one I parted from
And endured his absence while my heart burned,
And was patient without him while loneliness crept in

Like a bow that shoots an arrow, then twangs with
Like a bow that loosens an arrow and then recoils
Anguish; despair of it sets in, and it stifles its cry.
From grief, as despair emerges, so you endure

And if yearning could help one in anguish,
If passion could help one in deep agony
Mutammim would not have died of his long-standing grief.
The long-suffering wouldn't have died, still suffering
