إلىfor كمhow long أجوبُI roam الأرضَthe earth مالِيI have no مُعَرَّسٌovernight resting place
ولاand no لِمسِيريfor my journey فيthrough البلادِthe lands قُفُولُreturn
How long shall I roam the earth, with no resting place,
To where do I wander the earth without purpose
and no return from my journey through the lands?
And my journey through the countries without rest
كأَنّيَas though I فيin الدّنياthe world قَذَاةٌa speck بِمُقْلَةٍin an eye
تَرَدَّدُmoves to and fro فيin أرجائِهاits reaches وتَجولُand roams
As though, in this world, I were a speck in an eye,
As if I am in this life a mote in the eye
moving to and fro within its reaches and roaming.
That wanders through its regions and roams
أشِيمُI watch for بهاin it برقَthe lightning of الحيَاrain وهْوyet it is خُلَّبٌdeceptive, rainless
وأرتادُand I seek out أرضَthe land of الروضِmeadows وهْيyet it is مَحولُbarren
I watch there for rain's lightning, yet it brings no rain,
I live in it with the lightning flash of life fleeting
and I seek out meadowland, yet it is barren.
And I tread the land of bliss while it passes
وماand there is no مِنfrom تكالِيفthe burdens of الحياةِlife وبُؤسِهاand its misery
خَلاصٌdeliverance بغيرِwithout الموتِdeath وهْوand it is مَهُولُterrifying
And from life's burdens and its misery there is no
And there is no escape from the sorrows of life
deliverance except through death—and it is terrifying.
Except through death, uncertain and feared
