حتّىuntil مَتَىwhen ياO قلبُheart لاnot تَستفيقْyou come to your senses
حَسْبُكَenough for you قدalready حُمِّلتَyou have been burdened مالاwhat ... not تُطيقْyou can bear
How long, O heart, will you not come to your senses?
How long, O heart, will you not awaken,
Enough! You have been burdened with what you cannot bear.
You have been burdened with more than you can bear.
أضنَاكَhas worn you down إشفاقُكَyour apprehension منof غَدرِهمْtheir betrayal
وماand what عَسىmight يُجديavail حِذَارُcaution الشَّفِيقْthe anxious one
Your fear of their betrayal has worn you down,
Your sorrow for their betrayal has weakened you,
and what good can the anxious one's caution do?
And what can the wariness of the kind-hearted avail?
إنif أخْلَفُواthey break عَهدَكyour covenant أوor بدَّلُواthey change
فكُنthen be بِحُسْنof good الصَّبرِpatience عنهُمwithout them خَليقْworthy
If they break their pledge to you or change,
If they break their vow or change,
then be worthy of noble patience without them.
Then be calmly patient with them.
واعزِمand resolve عَلىupon سُلوانِهِمforgetting them عَزْمةًa firm resolve
تَثْنِيكَrestores you بعدafter الرِّقِّbondage حُرّاًfree طليقْunbound
And make a firm resolve to forget them,
And determine to be gentle with them,
one that restores you, after bondage, free and unbound.
A determination that will free you after enslavement.
لاdo not تَبكِهِمweep for them إنif نَزَحَتْhas become distant دارُهُمْtheir home
واهجرْهُمُand forsake them هجرَthe abandonment of الخَلِيِّthe carefree one المُفيقْthe clear-headed one
Do not weep for them if their home lies far away,
Do not cry over them if their homes are deserted,
and forsake them as one carefree and clear-headed would.
And abandon them like the resolute man abandoning his tribe.
لنwill not تعدَمَyou lack الأَعواضَreplacements عنهُمfor them ولاَnor
فيin الأرضِthe earth إنif أنتَyou ترحَّلتَyou journey ضِيقْnarrowness
You will not lack others to take their place, nor
You will not lack replacements for them, nor
is the earth too narrow, if you journey.
Will the earth be too narrow if you travel.
دَعْleave ذاthis فماfor ... not الناسُpeople سواءٌalike ولاnor
يلْقَىfinds الفتَىa young man فيin كلِّevery أرضٍland صَديقْa friend
Leave that aside: people are not alike, nor
Leave them be, for people are not equal,
does a young man find a friend in every land.
And a man will not find a friend in every land.
وهبكَand suppose you تلقىfind عِوضاًa replacement عنهُمُfor them
أراجعٌwill ... return? عصرُthe season of الشبابِyouth الأَنيقْthe lovely
And suppose you find a replacement for them:
Your youth will replace them for you,
will the lovely season of youth return?
The graceful period of early manhood.
I grew attached to them حينَwhen رداءُthe mantle of الصِّبَاyouth
ضَافٍample وغُصنيand my branch ذُوpossessing اعتدالٍstraightness ورِيقْleafy
I grew attached to them when youth's mantle
I clung to them when the robe of childhood
was ample, and my branch was straight and leafy.
Clothed me, and my branch was balanced and elegant.
حتىuntil إذاwhen أُشرِبَwas steeped قَلبيmy heart لهُمْfor them
حُبّاlove جَرىflowed فيin الجسمِthe body جَرْيَlike the flowing of الرَّحيقْpure wine
Until, when my heart had been steeped, for them,
Until, when my heart was imbued with love for them,
in love that coursed through my body like pure wine,
Love flowed through my body like pure wine.
ألتِمِسُI seek الأعواضَreplacements عنهُمfor them َلقَدindeed
أتيتُI have done ماwhat ليسَdoes not بمثليfor one like me يَليقْbefit
am I to seek replacements for them? Indeed,
I seek substitutes for them, for indeed,
I have done what does not befit one like me.
I have come to what does not befit one like me.
أرُوعُهمI alarm them بالعَتْبwith reproach مُستصلِحاseeking reconciliation
وتحتَand beneath ذاكthat العَتبِreproach قَلبٌa heart شَفيقtender
I alarm them with reproach, seeking reconciliation,
I chide them gently, conciliating,
yet beneath that reproach lies a tender heart
Though beneath that chiding lies a tender heart,
يرعَىsafeguards لهمfor them ماwhat ضيَّعُواthey neglected إِنَّهُindeed it
بِهمْtoward them علىdespite ماwhat كانَhas been منهُمfrom them رَفيقْgentle
that safeguards for them what they neglected; indeed, it
That overlooks what they squandered. Indeed,
is gentle toward them, despite what they have done.
It deals with them as they dealt with it, gently.
