He is the generous one whom his praiser meets
even if he exaggerates—surpassing all he has praised and described.
Though he surpasses whatever praise or description

Difficult to persuade when you provoke him
sparing in approval; yet if you seek his compassion, he relents.
Scant with pleasure but if you entreat him he obliges

Indifferent to ideals never ceasing
the vicissitudes of time, enamored of them and ardently devoted.
To pursue them throughout the turns of fate

If the rain fails, his gifts do not fail;
If rain fails, his gifts do not fail
or if time is harsh to its children, he is gentle.
Or if time treats harshly its sons, he treats gently

Just in judgment, except in his gifts,

he never rules on wealth without being unjust and arbitrary.
Except with fairness and excess

His bounty embraces the lowly and the noble,
His bounties encompass the flawed and the noble
as though he were the sea, holding pearls and shells.
As if he were the sea containing pearl and shell

His character is free of any deed for which he could be blamed;
Of impeccable morals, no act to be blamed on him
so you see no excellence turning away from him.
You see no perfection from which he desists
