فَبُليتُso I was afflicted منهfrom him بِهِجرَةٍwith abandonment وفرَاقِand parting
He grew accustomed to aversion and answered the call of separation.
He bent his ear to the call of desire
So I suffered his abandonment and parting.
So I suffered his estrangement and separation
والصّبُّand the lovesick one راحتُهُhis solace البكاءُweeping ومُذْand since نَأىhe went away
إنْسانُthe pupil عَينِيَof my eye أمْحلَتْgrew parched آمَاقيmy eye-corners
The lovesick one's solace is weeping; and since he went away—
And weeping became my solace since he went away
the pupil of my eye—my eye-corners have grown parched.
The apple of my eye, my hopes have been dashed
لوif كنتُI were أطمعُI hope فيfor بقاءِthe endurance of عُهودِهِhis pledges
سكنَتْwould be stilled بَلابِلُthe anxieties of قَلبيَmy heart الخَفّاقِfluttering
If I could hope that his pledges would endure,
Had I hoped for the permanence of his pledges
the anxieties of my fluttering heart would be stilled.
The palpitations of my heart would have been calmed
