حَالَhe changed عمَّاfrom what عهدتُهI had known of him مِنof ودادِيaffection for me
حَالَ عمَّا عهدتُه مِن ودادِي
واعتَدَىand he went too far فيin قَطيعتيcutting me off وبِعَادِيand shunning me
واعتَدَى في قَطيعتي وبِعَادِي
He changed from the affection for me I had known in him,
His condition changed from the love I knew,
and went too far in cutting me off and shunning me.
And he transgressed in parting and avoiding me.
وسَلانيand he forgot me وقالand he said كمhow much جُهْدُstrength ماwhat يَبremains (first part)
وسَلاني وقال كم جُهْدُ ما يَب
قىremains (second part) بِجِسمٍin a body مُضنىًwasted بغيرwithout فُؤادِa heart
قى بِجِسمٍ مُضنىً بغير فُؤادِ
And he forgot me and said, 'How much strength is
He asked me how a body wearied and distressed,
left in a wasted body without a heart?'
Can survive without a heart.
وأطاعَand he heeded الوُشاةَthe slanderers فِيَّagainst me وصعبٌand it is grievous
وأطاعَ الوُشاةَ فِيَّ وصعبٌ
أنthat يُطيعَshould heed الحبيبُthe beloved قولَthe words of الأعادِيthe enemies
أن يُطيعَ الحبيبُ قولَ الأعادِي
And he heeded the slanderers against me—and it is grievous
He obeyed the slanderers about me, yet how strange
that the beloved should heed the words of enemies.
That the beloved should heed the words of enemies.
وَهوand he is منin relation to نَاظِريmy eye وقَلبيand my heart وإنand even if مَلgrew weary (first part)
وَهو من نَاظِري وقَلبي وإن مَل
لَgrew weary (second part) وأبدَىand he showed القِلَىaversion مكانُthe place of السّوادِthe black core
لَ وأبدَى القِلَى مكانُ السّوادِ
Yet in my eye and heart, even if he grows
He is the lover of my eyes and heart, though now
weary and shows aversion, he holds the place of their black core.
Estrangement has replaced affection.
