تَناءَتْdrew far away بنَاwith us عنfrom أَرضِthe land of نَجدٍNajd وأهلِهِand its people
نَوَىseparation غُربَةٍexile كالصّدعِlike a fissure فيin الحجَرِthe stone الصّلْدِhard
Far from the land of Najd and its people we were carried
The home of Najd and its people has drifted far from us,
By exile's separation, like a fissure in hard stone.
To a foreign land, like a crack in solid rock.
وقَدand indeed قِيلَit has been said فيin اليأسِdespair الشّفاءُthe cure مِنfrom الهوىpassionate love
ودَائيand my illness الّذيwhich أَقضيI perish بهِfrom it اليأسُdespair منof نَجدِNajd
And it has been said: in despair lies the cure for love;
It's said that giving up hope cures love's agony,
Yet my illness—the one that kills me—is despair of Najd.
Yet my malady, despair itself cannot heal.
بلادٌa land بهاin it صاحبتُI kept company with شَرْخَthe bloom of شَبِيبتيmy youth
وفارقتُand I parted from إِخوانيmy companions الكِرامَthe noble ذَوِيpossessors of وُدّيmy affection
A land where I spent the bloom of my youth,
A home where I shared the bloom of my youth,
And parted from my noble companions, whom I love.
And left behind dear brothers, noble friends.
إذاwhenever خطَرتْcrossed منهمof them علىupon القلبِthe heart خطرَةٌa fleeting thought
تدلَّهتُI became distraught حتىuntil ماnot أُعيدُI reply ولاnor أُبْديI begin to speak
Whenever a thought of them crosses my heart,
When thoughts of them cross my heart now and then,
I become so distraught that I neither reply nor begin to speak.
I am distraught, speechless, words cannot convey.
