    If my letters arrived in proportion to my longing,

    they would follow one another like my tears or my breaths.

    And if I found a way, or had the power to

    free a mind held captive in the cup’s hand,

    بمائها لا مدادا فوق قرطاس

    I would make the black of my eye flow over its white,

    with its tears, not ink upon a sheet of paper;

    and say to longing, “O Subhan, dictate to

    my hand—I seek protection for you from inarticulacy and speechlessness—

    so that I may confide to you what ails me, just as

    the sick man confides his complaint to the healer.”
