حَسبيenough for me منof العيشِlife خيرُthe best العيشِof life يُدرِكُهُattains it
حَسبي من العيشِ خيرُ العيشِ يُدرِكُهُ
سَوايَsomeone other than me بيthrough me وليَand mine are الأوصابُailments والنَّصَبُand weariness
سَوايَ بي وليَ الأوصابُ والنَّصَبُ
Enough for me in life: life's best is attained
My contentment from life is that I get the best from life
By another through me, while ailments and weariness are mine.
Whether I have friends and helpers or hardship and adversity
كأنّنيas though I were البَوُّthe stuffed calfskin تُسْتَمْرىis coaxed to yield milk العَجولُthe bereaved she-camel بِهِwith it
كأنّني البَوُّ تُسْتَمْرى العَجولُ بِهِ
وإِنَّماand only لِسِواهُfor another, not it الدَّرُthe flowing milk والحَلَبُand the milk drawn
وإِنَّما لِسِواهُ الدَّرُ والحَلَبُ
I am like the stuffed calfskin used to coax a bereaved she-camel to yield milk,
As though I am grass eaten by the camels
Yet the flowing milk and the milk drawn are for another alone.
Yet truly for it there is rain and milk
