مُتباعِدٍkeeping aloof بالهجرthrough estrangement وَهوَthough he is قريبُnear
My soul be ransom for a reproachful tyrant,
who keeps aloof through estrangement, though he is near.
فقَمَرٌfor he is a moon عليهِupon him منfrom ذوائبِهِhis tresses دُجًىnight-darkness

For he is a moon, veiled in the night of his tresses;
in him, a sand dune sways upon a slender bough.

He walks, and youth has worked upon his form
as the east wind works upon a tender bough.
فيin وجهِهِhis face ماءُthe water of الملاحةِbeauty حائِرٌpooled
فقلوبُناso our hearts الظَّمأَىthirsty عليهaround it تلوبُcircle
The water of beauty pools upon his face,
so our thirsty hearts circle around it.

لكنَّbut تلكَthose (arrows) تطيشُmiss their mark وَهيَwhile they (his glances) تُصيبُhit the mark
His glances strike the heart with the force of his arrows;
yet those arrows miss, while his glances strike true.
أشتاقُهُI long for him وهوthough he is السَّوادُthe dark pupil بناظريin my eye

مَنwho ليfor me بحُسنِwith the grace of الصَّبرpatience حينَwhen يغيبُhe is absent
I long for him, though he is the dark pupil of my eye;
who can grant me noble patience when he is absent?
أَحبَبتُI have loved فيهfor his sake اللائِمينَthose who reproach me لأَنَّهُbecause he
يحلوis sweet بسمعيto my hearing ذكرُهُthe mention of him ويَطيبُand is pleasing
For his sake I have loved even those who reproach me, because
the mention of him is sweet and pleasing to my ear.
ومنحتُهُand I gave him كلَّall الهوىlove دونَto the exclusion of الورىhumankind
طُرّاًwithout exception وماليyet I have no منof هواهُhis love نصيبُshare
And I gave him all my love, to the exclusion of all others,
without exception—yet I have no share of his love.
ومنَand among العجائبِthe wonders فعلُهُhis doing بيto me فيin الهوىlove
ماwhat تفعلُdo الأعداءُthe enemies وهوthough he is حبيبُa beloved
And one wonder is that, in love, he does to me
what enemies do, though he is my beloved.
إنif جارَhe is unjust إذnow that حَكَّمتُهُI made him arbiter فيover مُهجَتيmy soul
فالعَدلُthen justice فيin حُكمِthe rule of الغرامِpassion غريبُa stranger
If he is unjust, now that I have made him arbiter of my soul,
then justice is a stranger to the rule of passion.
والصَّبُّand the lovesick lover يَستَحلِيfinds sweet مراراتِthe bitter pangs of الهوىlove

And the lovesick lover finds the bitter pangs of love sweet
for his sake, and even torment is sweet to the lover.
