Meet those in need with a cheerful face, for it

is sweeter to noble people than bounty.

Perhaps one who hopes for your bounty today will grow wealthy,

and tomorrow you may be among those hoping for his bounty.

Be content with obscurity; through it you will live in safety

from what you fear and from enemies' hostility.

Before the heights lies a steep bank; if you venture across it,

rushing headlong, you will bring your life to destruction.

And if you survive and attain even the smallest goal

among those heights, you will make all humankind envy you.

So heed the counsel of one who almost—through his knowledge

of time's ways—knows today what tomorrow will bring.
