ماnot خَطَرcrossed السُّلوانُforgetting the beloved فِيin بَاليmy mind
فماso what الّذيthat أَطمعَgave hope to عُذّاليmy reproachers
Forgetting has never crossed my mind;
so what has given my reproachers hope?
وجدِيmy longing بهمْfor them فيon اليومِthis day كالأمسِas yesterday ماnot
غيّرَهُhas altered it ماwhat حَالَhas changed منof حَاليmy condition
My longing for them today is as yesterday's; nothing
that has changed in my circumstances has altered it.

I love, but my share from them is not as
I wish, nor does my heart forget.

Obstinacy in love, with nothing beneath it
but my ardent yearnings and my turmoil.

From them I receive hatred, and from my reproacher
on their account, lengthy talk and gossip.

And I would not care what has befallen me,
if only I were in their thoughts.

O moon upon a bān-tree bough, above
an imposing sand dune that does not crumble!

The talebearer has swayed you; what recourse have I
with one of slender stature, so prone to sway,

His murderous eye—there is no overseer
over its transgressions, nor any governor.

His gaze rules over our souls
as Abu al-Gharat rules over wealth.
