Look at my changing fortunes, how they have accustomed me
after my hair turned gray, to ways unlike my former ones.

وأيُّand what حالٍcondition علىover الأيامthe days لمnot تَحُلِhas changed
And in the shifting turns of time there is a lesson;
and what condition has not changed with passing days?
قدindeed كنتُI was مِسْعَرa kindler of حَربٍwar كلَّماwhenever خَمدَتْit died down

Once I was a kindler of war; whenever it died down,
I set it ablaze, striking sparks with gleaming swords on heads.
هَمِّيmy concern منازلةُdueling with الأقرانِmatched opponents أحسَبُهُمI reckoned them

فَرائسِيmy prey فَهُمُso they منِّيof me علىin وَجَلِfear
My concern was dueling with my equals; I reckoned them
my prey, and so they were in fear of me.

I pressed through terror more relentlessly than night, and charged more fiercely than
a torrent, and in battle was bolder than death.

So I became like a languid maiden, whose resting place is
on mattresses, behind the curtain and canopies.

I have nearly rotted from lingering so long, just as
a long stay in its sheath rusts an Indian blade.

After battle armor, I now go about in robes
of Dabiqi cloth—woe to me and to these robes!

Ease is neither my way nor my desire,
nor is luxurious living my concern or my occupation.

And I do not desire to attain glory in comfort,
nor high honor without shattering gleaming swords and spears.
