علَيكَyou must hold fast بالصّبرِto patience ياO قلبيmy heart فإنand if خَفِيَتْis hidden
علَيكَ بالصّبرِ يا قلبي فإن خَفِيَتْ
سبيلُهُits path عنكَfrom you فاسأَلْthen ask عنهُabout it منone who فَقَدَاhas suffered loss
سبيلُهُ عنكَ فاسأَلْ عنهُ من فَقَدَا
Cling to patience, my heart; and if hidden
is its path from you, ask one who has suffered loss about it.
فلنfor ... will never تَرىyou see واجِداًa grieving lover فيamong الناسِpeople فارقَparted from مَنone whom
فلن تَرى واجِداً في الناسِ فارقَ مَن
يَهوىhe loves فأَجْدىand benefited عليهِhim أَنthat قَضَىhe died كَمَدَاof grief
يَهوى فأَجْدى عليهِ أَن قَضَى كَمَدَا
For you will never find among people a grieving lover who parted from one
he loves and gained anything by dying of grief.
بالأَمسِyesterday رَاعَكَalarmed you بينٌa parting ماnot احتسبْتَyou had reckoned بهِon it
بالأَمسِ رَاعَكَ بينٌ ما احتسبْتَ بهِ
عَسىperhaps اللقاءُthe reunion الذيwhich لمdid not تَحْتَسِبْهُyou expect it غَدَاtomorrow
عَسى اللقاءُ الذي لم تَحْتَسِبْهُ غَدَا
Yesterday a parting you had not reckoned on alarmed you;
perhaps the reunion you did not expect will come tomorrow.
