أحْفَظتُمُyou angered قَلبيmy heart بِغَدْرِكُمُwith your betrayal
والقلبُand the heart أدْنَىthe slightest الغَدْرِbetrayal يُحفِظُهُangers it
You angered my heart with your betrayal;
and the slightest betrayal angers the heart.
وأَضَعتُمُand you cast aside عَهدَcovenant الهوَىlove وبِهِand by it
أقْسَمتُI swore أَنthat لاnot زِلتُI ceased أحْفَظُهُI keep it
And you cast aside love's covenant, by which
I swore I would never cease to keep it.
وظَنَنْتُمُand you thought وجْديmy passion يُكفِّرُatones for ماwhat
أصبحتُI have come to أسمَعُهُI hear it وألحَظُهُand I see it
And you thought my passion would atone for what
I now hear and see.
هَبْsuppose أَنّكُمthat you are ماءٌwater وبِيand in me is ظمأٌthirst
أفَلَسْتُam I not, then عندat قَذَاهُits impurities ألْفظُهُI spit it out
Suppose you are water and I am thirsty—
would I not, then, spit it out when it contains filth?
