    فالموتُ في حَدِّ الحُسامِ المُرهَفِ

    Do not be deceived by the thinness of a slender waist;

for death lies in the edge of a finely honed sword.

And beware the deadly strike of an eye that feigns languor,

that attacks with the force of a brutal, arrogant bully.

My thirst comes from cool lips—who has ever seen

one parched by coolness, given draught after draught of wine?

Who can secure me union with one who delays repaying his debts,

who promises repayment when he has the means, yet never keeps his word?

In his face the water of beauty lies pooled,

and on his cheek the rain-fed rose has not been plucked.

So it is as though the tracery of his sideburns on his cheek

were ants that have crept over a double-petalled rose.
