أباO Abu حَسَنٍHasan قَدindeed رَانَsettled heavily بعدafter بِعَادِكمyour departure
علىupon القلبِthe heart همٌّa sorrow ماnot أراهI see it يَزولُfading
O Abu Hasan, since you went away, there has settled
O Abu Hasan, after your departure there has settled
upon my heart a sorrow I cannot see passing.
upon my heart a sorrow I do not see fading.
أعلّلُI console نفسِيmyself أنّنيthat I سأَبثّهI shall pour it out
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle التقينَاwe meet والرّجاءُand hope مَطُولُever delaying
I soothe myself with the thought that I shall pour it out
I console myself with the thought that I shall pour it out
when we meet—but hope is long deferred.
when we meet—but hope keeps putting me off.
إذاwhenever قلتُI say فيat أعقابِthe end of ذَاthis العامِthe year نَلتقيwe shall meet
تَمادَىit drags on وأيّامُand the days of الهُمومِsorrows تَطُولُgrow long
Whenever I say, “At this year’s close we shall meet,”
Whenever I say, “At this year's end we shall meet,”
the year drags on, and sorrow’s days grow long.
it drags on, and the days of sorrow grow long.
وأقتَلُand the deadliest of أدْوائِيmy ailments بِعادُseparation from أحبّتِيmy loved ones
وداءُand the sickness of التّنائِيseparation ماas علمتَyou know قَتُولُdeadly
The deadliest of my ailments is my loved ones’ absence,
And the deadliest of my ailments is separation from my loved ones;
and separation’s malady, as far as I know, is fatal.
and the sickness of separation, as you know, is deadly.
وقدand indeed ساءَنيhas grieved me أنّthat اللّيالِيَthe nights غَيّرتْhave changed
أخِلاَّيmy close friends حتّىuntil ماnot يدُومُremains constant خَليلُa close friend
It grieves me that the nights have changed
And it has grieved me that the nights have changed
my intimate friends, until no friend remains constant.
my close friends, until no friend remains constant.
وجفوةُand the coldness of مجدِMajd الدّينal-Din أَعدَلُthe most impartial شاهِدٍwitness
علىto أنّthat أهواءَthe affections of القلوبِthe hearts تَحُولُchange
And Majd al-Din’s estrangement is the truest witness
And Majd al-Din's coldness is the most impartial witness
that the affections of hearts can change.
that the affections of hearts change.
أساءَmade unfavorable التّنائيseparation ظنَّهhis opinion بيof me وإنّنِيand indeed I
لأَعهَدُهُI certainly remember it فيin القُربِnearness وهوwhile it جَميلُfavorable
Separation has soured his opinion of me, although I
Separation has soured his opinion of me, though I
remember him, when near, as gracious.
well remember it as favorable when we were near.
جفَانيhe kept away from me زماناًfor a time لاnot مَلاَلاًout of weariness وإنّماbut only
نَهَتْهُheld him back حُزُونٌrugged lands بَينَنَاbetween us وسُهولُand plains
He kept aloof from me for a time—not out of weariness;
He has kept away from me awhile, not out of weariness, but only because
only rugged uplands and plains between us held him back:
rugged lands and plains between us have held him back:
مَفاوِزُdeserts لاnot يَسْطِيعُcan قطعَcrossing فِجاجِهاtheir passes
رسولٌa messenger ولوand even if أنّthat الخيالَthe dream-vision رسولُa messenger
trackless deserts whose passes no messenger can cross,
deserts whose passes cannot be crossed
even were the dream-phantom itself a messenger.
by a messenger, even if a dream-vision were the messenger.
ولاand no ذَنبَblame إلاّexcept للبِعادِon separation فماso what لَناfor us
دَنوْنَاwe have drawn near وحَظّيand my share فيin الدُّنُوِّnearness قليلُscant
Distance alone is to blame—what is the matter with us?
And only separation is to blame; what, then, ails us?
We have drawn near, yet my share of nearness is slight.
We have drawn near, yet my share of nearness is scant.
