لمّاwhen رَأوْاthey saw وجْدِيmy passionate longing بهمfor them تَجرَّمُواthey found fault
وأَلزَمُونيand they charged me with الذّنبَthe blame والجانيwhile the offender هُمُthey
When they saw my longing for them, they found fault with me,
and laid the blame on me, though they were the guilty ones.
قالُواthey said اِستَزارَhe invited to visit طيفَنَاour phantom تَبّاًdamnation لَهُupon him
منfor مُغرَمٍa lover وهَلand does ينامُsleep المغرَمُthe lover
They said: He invited our phantom to visit—damn him
for a lover! Does a lover ever sleep?
أَينَwhere شهودُthe witnesses ماwhat أدَّعَىhe claimed مِنof حُبِّناlove for us
أَينَwhere السّهادُsleeplessness والجَوىand burning anguish والسّقَمُand sickness
Where are the witnesses to his claimed love for us?
Where are sleeplessness, burning anguish, and sickness?
I made them subside
تَدفَّقَتْthey poured forth ومازَجَand mingled with الدّمعَthe tears دَمُblood
Where are tears that, whenever I stemmed them,
poured forth, and blood mingled with the tears?
أَخفَىconcealed الملالُweariness عنهُمُfrom them ماwhat بِيَails me مِنof
بَرْحِthe torment of قِلاهُمُtheir aversion والمَلالُand weariness أبكَمُmute
Weariness hid from them what ails me:
the torment of their aversion; weariness is mute.
كذَبتُI denied فِيهِمin them ماwhat رَأَيتُI saw مِنof قِلىًaversion
فلِمْso why أطاعُواthey heeded فِيَّabout me ماwhat تَوهَّمواthey imagined
I denied the aversion I saw in them;
so why did they heed what they imagined about me?
