أَيُلامُis he to be blamed? مسلوبُrobbed of الفؤادِthe heart فقيدُهُbereft of it
جَحَدَhe denied الغرامَpassionate love فأَثْبتتهُso proved it شُهودُهُits witnesses
Can one robbed of his heart, bereft of it, be blamed?
He denied his passion, but its witnesses proved it.
والسِرُّand the secret فيon يومِthe day of الوَداعِfarewell كأَنَّهُas though it were
قَبَسٌa firebrand تضرَّمَblazed up فيin الظلامِthe darkness وَقُودُهُits fuel
And on the day of farewell, the secret was like
A firebrand whose fuel blazed in the darkness.
وإِذاand when أَقرَّتْconfessed بالهَوىto love زَفَراتُهُhis sighs
لمdid not يُغنِavail عَنهُhim وإِنand even if أَصَرَّhe persisted جُحودُهُhis denial
And when his sighs confess to love,
His denial cannot help him, even if he persists.
بَرحَhas vanished الخفاءُconcealment وبانand became clear يأَسُكَyour despair منهُمُof them
فإِلاَمَso how long أَنتَyou جَوِيsick with love الفؤادِthe heart عَميدُهُstricken in it
Concealment has vanished, and your despair of them is plain;
So how long will you remain heartsick and stricken?
يُبليwears out الزّمانُtime هَوَىthe passion of القلوبِthe hearts وحبُّهُمand love for them
لاdoes not يَضمَحِلُّfade away ولاnor يَرِثُّwear out جَديدُهُits freshness
Time wears out the passion of hearts, yet love for them
Never fades, nor does its freshness grow threadbare.
وكأَنَّand as though دَمعَكَyour tears حينwhen يخطُرُcomes to mind ذكرُهُمthe thought of them
عِقدٌa necklace وَهَىcame apart فانثَالَso cascaded منهُfrom it فَريدُهُits pearls
And your tears, when the thought of them arises, are like
A necklace that has broken, its pearls cascading from it.
تَحكيyou resemble الغمامَthe raincloud زفيرُthe sigh شَوقِكَof your longing برقُهits lightning
ونَشيجُand the sobbing دَمعِكَof your tears وَبْلُهُits downpour ورُعودُهُand its thunderclaps
You resemble the raincloud: your sigh of longing is its lightning,
And your tearful sobbing is its downpour and thunder.

هاجَhas stirred الجوَىlove's anguish لأَخِيfor a devotee of الهوَىlove تَغريدُهُits cooing
The doves weep at your moan, and many a time
Their cooing has stirred anguish in a lover.
ياO راقِدَslumbering الأجفانِthe eyelids عنheedless of قَلِقِrestless in الحشاthe heart
ولْهَانَdistraught with love أقْذَىhas made gritty طرفَهhis eye تَسهيدُهُhis sleeplessness
O you whose eyelids sleep, heedless of one with a restless heart,
Distraught with love, whose sleeplessness has made his eye gritty:
ماذَاwhat عَليكَis it to you إذاif بَكىhe weeps for أَحبابَهhis loved ones
ذُوone possessed of غُربةٍseparation from home نَائيdistant in المحلِّthe dwelling بعيدُهُremote in it
What harm is it to you if he weeps for his loved ones,
One far from home, whose dwelling is distant and remote?
