عليّfor me ولمand did not يَطُلْgrow long ليلُthe night النّيَامِof the sleepers
I lay awake in Khartabirt, and my night grew long
for me, though the sleepers’ night did not.
أفكِّرُI ponder فيon مُفارقَتِيmy parting from رِجالاًmen
همُthey are الكُرَمَاءُthe generous أبناءُsons الكِرامِof the generous
I ponder my parting from men
who are generous, sons of the generous.
كأنّيas though I were السّهمُthe arrow يُفْردُis singled out باعتمادٍdeliberately

As though I were the arrow deliberately singled out
from among the arrows for the drawing of the bow.
