عجمتنيtested me by biting الخطوبcalamities حيناfor a time فلماthen, when
عجمتني الخطوب حينا فلما
عجزتwere unable أنto تطيقmanage منيof me مساغاa passage down the throat
عجزت أن تطيق مني مساغا
Calamities tried their teeth on me awhile; then, when
The misfortunes overwhelmed me for a while, but when
they proved unable to swallow me,
They could no longer bear my tolerance
لفظتنيspat me out وسالمتنيand made peace with me فقدso indeed عاbeginning of عاد ('became')
لفظتني وسالمتني فقد عا
دending of عاد ('became') حذاريmy fear أمناsafety وشغليand my toil فراغاleisure
د حذاري أمنا وشغلي فراغا
they spat me out and made peace with me; thus
They dismissed me and bid me farewell, so my caution returned
my fear became safety, and my toil became leisure.
As a safe refuge, and my occupation as solace
وأخوand the companion of الصبرpatience فيamid الحوادثcalamities إنif لمnot
وأخو الصبر في الحوادث إن لم
يلقهovertakes him الحينdeath مدركone who attains ماwhat أراغاhe sought
يلقه الحين مدرك ما أراغا
And the companion of patience amid calamities, unless
And patience in calamities, if not
death overtakes him, attains what he sought.
