O dwelling, if rain is withheld from

your grounds by the night-cloud of successive showers,

then I shall surely rain my tears upon you,

enough to replace the morning rainclouds.

How many a one dwelt in your grounds, with downcast

    eyes and love beyond reach,

    arresting every gaze, so

    they hover over him, thirsting.

Then the nights struck their throngs

    with dispersal and separation.

And the turns of this age come by night

with calamities, or visit in the morning.

They do good, but not on purpose, and

    inflict harm with deliberate intent.

What have I to do with the days? How often

their piercing shafts slay my heart!

They muddied my drinking water, and

their injustice deliberately made my pastures barren.

And they targeted me with calamities,

sending them in succession without restraint.

And to you I lament the torment of a grief

    that grows with every day.

It has barred joy from a heart

    that no gain can gladden.

Were it not for its pain at what

it endures, it would be counted among lifeless things.
