إلىto اللهِGod أشكُوI lament رَوعَتيmy terror ورزِيَّتيand my grievous loss
وحُرقَةَand the burning pain أحشائيmy entrails لفَقْدِat the loss of أبيAbu بَكرِBakr
To God I lament my terror and my grievous loss,
I complain to Allah of my anxiety and misery
and the burning pain in my entrails at the loss of Abu Bakr.
And the burning in my intestines from missing my father Bakr
خَلاbecame empty ناظِريmy eye مِنهof him وكانand he was سوادَهُits pupil
ولمand did not يَخْلُbecome empty منof حزنيmy sorrow ووجديand my longing بهfor him صَدْريmy breast
My eye is bereft of him, though he was its pupil,
My eyes are empty of him and his image was their pupil
yet my breast is not empty of my sorrow and longing for him.
And my chest was never empty of sorrow and passion for him
خَشِيتُI feared عليهfor him اليُتْمَorphanhood لكنَّbut ثُكْلَهُthe loss of him
ولوعَتَهand its anguish لمdid not يخطُرَاboth occur ليto me علىin فِكْرِthought
I feared he would be orphaned, but losing him
I feared orphanhood for him but his bereavement and yearning
and the anguish of it never crossed my mind.
Never occurred to me in thought
فياso, oh ليتَهif only he لاقىfaced الذيwhat كنتُI was أختَشيI fear
عليهfor him وأنّيand that I دونَهُinstead of him صاحبُthe occupant of القَبْرِthe grave
Oh, if only he had faced what I had feared
If only he met what I used to fear for him
for him, and I, instead of him, were the one in the grave!
While I would be the companion of the grave
فماfor there is no فيin حياتيmy life بعدَهُafter him ليَfor me راحَةٌcomfort
فياso, oh طولَthe length of حُزنيmy sorrow إنif تطاولَis prolonged بيfor me عُمريmy lifetime
For there is no comfort for me in life after him;
After him there is no comfort left in my life
oh, how long my sorrow will be if my life is prolonged!
Oh how long my grief will last if my lifetime is prolonged
ولمand did not تُسْلِنيconsole me الأيَّامُthe days عنهُfor his loss وإنَّماbut rather
سُلُوِّيmy solace بماin what أرجوI hope for منof الأجْرِthe reward فيthrough الصَّبْرِpatience
Nor have the days consoled me for his loss; rather,
The days did not ask me about him, rather
my solace lies in the reward I hope for through patience.
My consolation is in the reward I hope for in patience
