نزّهتُI kept free نفسيَmyself عنfrom منِّreproachful reminders of favors الرّجالِmen وإنْand even if
نزّهتُ نفسيَ عن منِّ الرّجالِ وإنْ
عَلَتْrose high بهمwith them رُتَبُranks الدّنياthis world وإنand even if شَمَخواthey held their heads high
عَلَتْ بهم رُتَبُ الدّنيا وإن شَمَخوا
I have kept myself free of men's reproachful reminders of their favors, even if
Worldly ranks have raised them high, and even if they hold their heads aloft.
إذاif المطامعُdesires for gain قادتنيled me إلىto طَمعٍgreed
إذا المطامعُ قادتني إلى طَمعٍ
يُزريdebases فماذاthen what أفادavailed الشَّيبُgray hair والشَّيَخُand old age
يُزري فماذا أفاد الشَّيبُ والشَّيَخُ
If desires for gain lead me into greed
That debases me, what good have gray hair and old age done?
