The oryx herd’s covert is the lion’s lair.

How, then, can the love-maddened, grief-stricken lover find union?

And white swords stand unsheathed before the fair women’s chambers,

Resembling channels of water that does not flow.

And every brown spear bears a broad, keen spearhead,

Like a firebrand, never taken from fire and never burning.

    وإن تأَوَّد سَاوى مَيلَ ذِي الأوَدِ

    When aimed straight, it cures every obstinate man;

And if it bends, it straightens the crooked man’s tilt.

And white swords and brown spears slake their thirst only with blood,

From every battle whose edges seethe with foam.

They grew rusty until he burnished them in throats and in the

heads—a gallant man who slakes every thirsty one’s burning thirst.

Who brought generosity and courage, when both had vanished,

Into being, by striking heads and bestowing gifts.

And put learning back in demand after its slump, so you

See none but a diligent seeker of knowledge.

Whose justice made unattended sheep safe in the

den, with no need to guard against the lion’s leap.

Who meets the guilty, delivered up by what

They deliberately committed, with unstinting pardon.

    فَمنُّهُ غيرُ مَمنونٍ ولا نَكِدِ

    He lavishes gifts, delighted in them and joyful;

So his bounty is neither cut short nor scant.

And never does he fume in fury and anger

Without revealing a face dewy with modesty,

Like Mashrafi swords, whose beautiful sheen remains

In peace and war, in heads and scabbards.
