ونَازِحٍand one far away فيin فُؤادِيmy heart منfrom هواهُlove for him صَدىًthirst
لمdid not يَروِquench غُلَّتهits burning thirst بالعَلِّwith the second draught والنَّهَلِand the first draught
And one far away—my heart holds a thirst born of love for him,
A yearning in my heart for his love an echo
a burning thirst unquenched by a second draught or a first.
That saw not his charm with eloquence and valley lush
فِيin فِيهِhis mouth ماwhat فيin جِنَانِgardens الخُلدِeternity منof دُرَرٍpearls
ومنand of أقَاحٍdaisies ومِنand of خَمرٍwine ومنand of عَسَلِhoney
In his mouth is what the gardens of eternity hold: pearls,
In his mouth what is in gardens of eternity of pearls
and daisies, and wine, and honey.
And from buds and from wine and from honey
لوif كُنتُI was أعلَمُknowing أنّthat البينَparting يفجؤُنيtakes me by surprise
روَّيتُI quenched قَبلbefore النّوَىseparation قَلبيmy heart منfrom القُبَلِthe kisses
Had I known that parting would take me by surprise,
If I had known that separation would surprise me
I would have quenched my heart with kisses before separation.
I would have, before desire, sated my heart with kisses
