وجَدَّدَand renewed وَجْدِيmy grief بعدماafter كانhad been قدalready عفَاfaded
وراجَعَنيand returned to me حِلميmy composure ووَازَرَنيand supported me صَبْرِيmy patience
And my grief was renewed after it had faded
My passion was revived after it had ceased
and my composure had returned to me and my patience had sustained me,
My dream revisited me and my patience consoled me
هتوفُa calling bird الضّحىmidmorning مفجوعةٌbereaved بأليفِهاof her mate
تُهَيِّجُshe stirs أشجانَsorrows الفؤادِthe heart وماand not تَدْرِيshe knows
by a bird calling at midmorning, bereaved of her mate,
The morning breeze wails for its beloved
who stirs the heart’s sorrows without knowing it.
Stirring the sorrows of my heart though unaware
ولوand if أنّهاthat she إذْwhen أعْولَتْshe wailed فاضَoverflowed دمعُهاher tears
لقلتُthen I would have said هيshe الخنساءُal-Khansa تَبكِيshe weeps علىover صَخْرِSakhr
And had her tears overflowed when she wailed,
And had it wept profusely when it moaned
I would have said, “She is al-Khansa, weeping over Sakhr.”
I would have said it was Al-Khansa grieving over Sakhr
ولكنّهاbut she لمdid not تُذْرِshed دمعاًtears وأدمُعيand my tears
إذاwhen قُرِنتare compared بالقَطرwith the rain زادتexceed علىbeyond القَطرِthe rain
But she shed no tears, while my tears,
But it shed no tears while mine overflowed
when compared with the rain, surpass the rain.
For next to drops of rain mine poured even more
