بِبنتِ كرْمٍ في الكأسِ تأتَلِقُ
And banish your cares, if they come knocking,
Wash away your worries if they knock,
with a daughter of the vine, gleaming in the cup.
With a daughter of generosity in a cup that gleams.

وقلتَ أيدِي السّقَاةِ تحتَرِقُ
When the mixing water cuts through it, it sets it aflame,
When the temper sees her, it kindles her,
and you would say, “The cupbearers’ hands are burning.”
And you say the hands of the cupbearers are aflame.

The water crowned it with its bubbles:
The water crowns her from its springs,
a crown with which it cloaks and girds itself.
A crown with which she adorns herself and prattles.

They say it cannot dwell with sorrow in
It is said, “Do not settle, and worry in,
a breast—oh, what bliss, if they spoke true!
A breast.” So blessed is he if they were truthful.

And how can wine reach my sorrow, when

the roads to my sorrow have been barred to it?
The paths to it other than it are blocked?
