ومَنand whoever عَلِقَتْheld fast بالصّالِحِto al-Salih المَلْكِthe king كفُّهُhis hand
فَليسso there is no لهfor him دُونَshort of العُلاَeminence والغِنَىand wealth شَرْطُstipulation
And anyone whose hand holds fast to King al-Salih
has no terms short of eminence and wealth.
ومِنand from دُونِهِbefore him إنif رابَthreatened خطبٌa calamity ذَوابلٌslender spears
وبيضٌand bright swords وجردٌand sleek steeds لاnot القَتادَةُthe thorn-tree والخُرْطُand thorn-stripping
Before him, should peril threaten, stand slender spears,
and bright swords and sleek steeds—not a thorn-tree to strip.
أثارَتْstirred جُدودِيmy fortunes مذsince عَلِقتُI clung بحبلِهto his rope
وكانand there had been لهاfor them فيin خطبcalamity عَشوائِهاtheir blind she-camel خَبْطُblundering
My fortunes stirred once I clung to his rope,
though in hardship they had blundered like a blind she-camel.
لهhe has نائِلٌbounty يَسرِيtravels by night إلىto كلِّevery آملٍhopeful seeker
إذاwhen جيرةٌneighbors سيمواthey were asked for النَّوالَbounty فلمbut did not يُنطُواthey give
His bounty travels by night to every hopeful seeker,
when neighbors, asked for bounty, give none.
علىupon كلِّevery وجهٍface نَضرةٌradiance منfrom نوالِهِhis bounty
وفيand on كلَّevery جيدٍneck منfrom صنائِعِهِhis favors قُرْطُan earring
On every face is a glow from his bounty,
and on every neck, an earring from his favors.
وكمand how many أملٍa hope جعْدٍtightly curled أتَىcame اليأسُdespair دونَهbefore it
تَلقَّاهُmet it منfrom إنعامِهhis generosity نائلٌbounty سَبْطُfreely flowing
And many a tightly curled hope, with despair barring its way,
has been met by freely flowing bounty from his generosity.
وكنتُand I was أُرَجِّيhoping منهfrom him ماthat which دونَهbeneath it الغِنَىwealth
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle غَداcame to be فيin كفِّهhis hand الرّفْعُraising والحطُّand lowering
And I hoped from him for more than wealth,
when the power to raise and lower came into his hand.
فلمّاthen when ورَىsparked زندُthe fire-stick المعاليglory بِكفِّهِin his hand
وقالand said نَداهُhis bounty للوفُودِto the delegations ألَاtake heed! حُطّواyou all, alight!
Then, when the fire-stick of glory sparked in his hand,
and his bounty told the delegations, 'Come, alight!'
نأَتْdrew far away بِيwith me اللّيالِيthe nights عنهfrom him لكنَّbut جُودَهُhis generosity
أتَانِيcame to me ولمand did not يَحجِزْهُhold it back نأْيٌdistance ولاnor شَطُّremoteness
The nights carried me far from him, but his generosity
came to me, held back by neither distance nor remoteness.
كذاlikewise الغيثُrain يَسرِيtravels by night طالِباًseeking كلَّevery طالِبٍseeker
فكلُّso everyone لهُfor him منfrom فيضِthe overflow وابلهِits downpour قِسطُa share
So too rain travels by night, seeking every seeker,
and each has a share of its overflowing downpour.
وإنعامُهand his beneficence كالشمسlike the sun يَغشَىenvelops ضِياؤُهاits light
لمنfor whoever زَاغَturned aside أوor حاذَاهُaligned with him منfrom أُفْقِهاits horizon خَطُّa ray
His beneficence is like the sun, whose light envelops
whoever turns aside or lies in line with a ray from its horizon.
فأنزَرُso the smallest حَظِّيmy share منof مواهبهِhis gifts الغِنَىwealth
وأيسرُand the easiest تخويليthe endowment to me العشيرةُthe clan والرَّهطُand the kinsmen
Thus wealth is my smallest share of his gifts,
and his easiest endowment to me is a clan and kinsmen.
حبَانِيhe bestowed on me نُفُوساًsouls لاnot نَفِيساًsomething precious منfrom اللُّهَىlavish gifts
ونوَّلنيand he granted me ماwhat لمdid not يُنِلْbestow مَلِكٌa king قَطُّever
He bestowed souls on me, not mere treasures from lavish gifts,
and gave me what no king had ever given.
وماand not النَّاسُmen إلاّexcept آلُthe house of رزِّيكَRuzzik إنَّهُمُindeed they
هُمthey الذَّادةُthe defenders الشُبَّانُthe young men والسّادةُand the lords الشَّمطُthe gray-haired
None are truly men but the house of Ruzzik; indeed, they
are the young defenders and the gray-haired lords.
بنُوsons of الحربِwar فيon يومِthe day of الوغَىbattle وبنوand sons of النَّدَىgenerosity
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle بلادُthe lands of الناسِthe people جرَّدهاstripped them bare القَحطُdrought
Sons of war on the day of battle, and sons of bounty
when drought strips the lands of men bare.
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle احْتبَوْاthey sat with knees clasped فالراسياتُthen the firm-rooted mountains رجاجةًtrembling

When they sit with knees clasped, even firm-rooted mountains tremble;
and if they ride, they are lions, roused and snorting.

بهthrough it تُؤْمَنُare guarded against الأحداثُcalamities والمِيتَةُand death العَبْطُuntimely
They have a mountain—may calamity never shake its foundation—
through which one is safe from disasters and untimely death.
أقرَّacknowledged الورَىhumankind أنthat ليسis not كُفئاًfit لمُلكِهfor his kingship
سواهُother than him فقدso indeed زالceased التّنافُسُrivalry والغَبْطُand benign envy
Humankind has acknowledged that none is fit for his kingship
but he; rivalry and envy have therefore ceased.
فلاso may not زالتِcease الأقدارُthe fates تجرِيmove بأمرِهِat his command

May the fates forever move at his command,
and may the unbinding and binding of kingdoms rest in his hand.
