لاno ذَنبَblame للصَبّfor the lovesick lover المشُوقfilled with longing إذاwhen بَدَتْbecame apparent
لا ذَنبَ للصَبّ المشُوق إذا بَدَتْ
أسرَارُهhis secrets يَومَon the day of النّوىparting للعُذّلِto the reproachers
أسرَارُه يَومَ النّوى للعُذّلِ
No blame falls on the yearning lover when laid bare
No blame on the passionate lover
are his secrets to the reproachers on the day of parting.
When his secrets appeared on the day of departure
زَفَراتُهhis sighs نَمَّتْtold tales ولمand did not يُفْصحdisclose بِمَاabout what
زَفَراتُه نَمَّتْ ولم يُفْصح بِمَا
يُخفِيhe conceals فَجاءَthen came الدّمعُthe tears بِالخَبرِwith the news الجَليclear
يُخفِي فَجاءَ الدّمعُ بِالخَبرِ الجَلي
His sighs betrayed him, though he did not disclose what
His sighs grew, yet he did not divulge
he conceals; then tears came with the clear tidings.
What he concealed, so tears told the clear news
أفَنىexhausted صَدُودُكyour rejection فيin الدُّنُوِّnearness تَصَبُّريmy patient endurance
أفَنى صَدُودُك في الدُّنُوِّ تَصَبُّري
وأتَىand came الفراقُseparation فَبزَّand so stole حُسنَthe beauty of تجمّليmy dignified composure
وأتَى الفراقُ فَبزَّ حُسنَ تجمّلي
Your rejection, even in closeness, exhausted my patient endurance;
Your determination in life has faded
and parting came and stole the grace of my composure.
And separation has come, so persist in your beauty
فالعُمرُso life أجمعُin its entirety بينbetween هجرٍestrangement سَالِفٍearlier
فالعُمرُ أجمعُ بين هجرٍ سَالِفٍ
مَاضٍpast وبَيْنٍand separation آنفٍnew مُستقبَلِforthcoming
مَاضٍ وبَيْنٍ آنفٍ مُستقبَلِ
So all of life lies between an earlier estrangement,
For life brings together past separation
now past, and a new separation yet to come.
