إنif كنتُI am فيin مصرَEgypt مجهولاًunknown وقدand already شُهِرَتْhave been made known
فَضائِليmy virtues بينَamong بَدْوِnomads النّاسِthe people والحَضَرِand townspeople
If I am unknown in Egypt, though renowned
are my virtues among nomads and townspeople,
فماso there is no علىupon الشّمسِthe sun منany عارٍdisgrace تُعابُit is reproached بهfor it
إذاif اختَفىis hidden ضَوءُهاits light عنfrom غيرِnot ذيpossessing بَصَرِsight
then the sun bears no disgrace for which it can be blamed
if its light is hidden from one without sight.
كفىit is enough حَزَناًsorrow أَنَّthat الحوادثَmisfortunes قصَّرَتْhave restrained
يَديmy hand ولسانيand my tongue عنfrom نَوالٍgiving وعنand from أَمْرِcommand
It is sorrow enough that misfortunes have restrained
my hand and tongue from giving and commanding.
فماso do not يَخْتَشيfear الأعداءُthe enemies بأسيmy might وسَطوَتيand my power
ولاnor يرتَجيhope for الإخوانُthe brothers نَفعيmy help ولاnor نَصْريmy support
So my enemies do not fear my might and power,
nor do my brothers hope for my help or my support.
إذاwhen نابَهُمbefalls them خطبٌa calamity فكلُّthen all استِطاعَتيmy ability
When calamity befalls them, all I can muster
is a blaze of breaths, hotter than embers.
ولاand no خيرَgood فيin الدّنياthis world لمِثليfor one like me ولوand even if صَفَتْit is serene
إذاif كانhe is لاnot يُرجىis looked to لنفعٍfor benefit ولاnor ضَرِّharm
And this world holds no good for one like me, even if it is serene,
if neither benefit nor harm is expected of him.
سهلٌeasy علىfor العارِفِone acquainted بالدَّهرِwith time
ماwhatever نابَbefalls منof مُستصْعَبِwhat is difficult الأَمْرِthe matter
Easy for one who knows the ways of time
is whatever difficult matter befalls him.
وكلُّand all ماthat استُعْظِمَis deemed great منof حادِثٍan event
مُسْتَصْغَرٌdeemed small فيin جانِبِthe side of الصَّبْرِpatience
And every event deemed great
is deemed small beside patience.
