    وأستنجِدُ الصّبرَ الجميلَ ولا صَبرُ

    I reproach Time over you—if Time would make amends;

And seek the aid of noble patience, though I have none.

And ask about the path of consolation; it has appeared

Before my eyes, but its course is rugged.

And how can I find solace, when calamities are many?

Whenever one distressing event ends, another comes.

In my eighth decade, a calamity struck me,

A bereavement whose burden would weaken even a ten-year-old.

When Time had destroyed my people, who had always possessed

The summit of glory and great numbers.

    وإن سالَموا كان التَّبتُّلُ والذِّكرُ

    When they fought, they were lions defending their lair;

And when they made peace, there was devotion and remembrance of God.

    يُباحُ بها ثَغْرٌ ويُحمى بها ثَغْرُ

    Their swords have conquered and defended ever since they existed;

Through them a frontier is overrun, and through them a frontier is guarded.

They passed away; their world was folded up and cut short,

As though they had never lived while it lay unfolded.

Nothing remained but their memory and my grief

For them; neither grief nor memory will endure.

And I am left with no kin to answer my call,

No homeland to take refuge in, and no wealth.

As though I were made of something other than dust, for I have no

Handspan of the broad earth to myself, apart from others.

I was bereft of Abu Bakr, despite my deep love for him.

Alas, my anguish! What has this unprecedented calamity wrought!

When seven years of his life had passed, death seized him,

And I had hoped his life would be long.

    عتيقٌ بهذا يخبرُ الفأْلُ والزَّجْرُ

    And I said: 'Atiq—freed from the calamities of his time;

'Atiq—freed: so omens and augury foretold.

    ولا عجبٌ قد يُخْضَدُ الغُصُنُ النَّضْرُ

    But his death overtook him before maturity;

And no wonder: the fresh green bough may be snapped.

My close friends urge me to find consolation over him,

But far from it! After him, I know no consolation.

They say, 'How long this weeping?' But if there were revealed

The hidden depths of my suffering, stone would pity me and weep.

And I thought tears would cool my burning thirst,

Until I saw that sorrow's tears are embers.

Abu Bakr, my grief for you will never end,

Through all the nights, while days and months go by.

You have lengthened the night for me, until it is as though

All my days were night, with no dawn.

And I summon sleep, though it shies away,

Afraid to alight upon my eyelids.

Perhaps a phantom of you will visit my bed by night,

And I may lament to it what Time has hurled at me.

My thoughts bring you before me every night,

And your likenesses, the radiant stars, keep me company.

When longing presses upon me, I come to visit you,

Then return like a madman whom sorcery has bewildered.

And nearness to the grave that encloses you does me no good,

When a veil of earth lies between us.

I say to my soul when its longing grows fierce:

Hold fast to noble patience, if patience is possible.

Are we not children of the dead, our final return to them,

Without a doubt? The rootstock draws the branch to itself.

So we are like travelers who have halted to rest, and behind them

Are companions; when they catch up, the travelers depart.

    ومِنها يكون النّشْرُ والبعثُ والحَشرُ

    From the earth we were created, and in it is our return;

And from it come revival, resurrection, and the gathering.

She is the mother, with no kindness in her; our return

To her belly after birth is the kindness.

Bereaved, yet she sheds no tears after one who dies,

While every mother bereft of all her children weeps torrents.

Love of life has led mankind astray: the prudent,

Experienced man and the naïve are alike in delusion.

So let no one at ease feel safe from the nights' treachery,

Even if they grant him respite: their reprieve is deceit.

    ولا خَيرَ في عاريَّةٍ ردَّها القَسْرُ

    Life lends, and reclaims with violent force;

And there is no good in a loan reclaimed by force.

And we remain devoted to it, yet none of

Its gifts brings a pleasing outcome or ease.

Why, then, are we intoxicated with pursuing it?

And whoever among us attains it grows more intoxicated.

Gone is he who passed away, whom it favored so richly,

And his palm is empty of all it gathered.

And the wealth he gained in the days of life

To escape poverty is poverty on the Day of Return.

He is called to account for his date-stone's skin and dimple,

Yet neither much nor little of it followed him.

This is manifest loss; why, then, are we

Eager for a thing whose consequences are loss?

And in our forefathers there was a warning for us,

To open our eyes—if warning could restrain us.

They died out, so the earth's belly, after its loneliness,

Is inhabited and comforted by them, while its surface lies empty.

Their traces and their graves have faded,

As they vanished within them; no trace of the graves remains.

Is there, then, in these admonitions one to admonish me,

To cool the anguish that the breast conceals,

    And urge noble patience? For

Through it, fair recompense and reward are gained.

And he whom the hands of death wrested from my hand

Is my treasure for the day when treasure will avail me.
