هَجْرُestrangement القِلَىloathing والتَّجنّيand unjust reproach كانwas يَكفيكَاsuffices you
You turned against me when I turned against all mankind for your sake.
Hateful estrangement and unjust reproach would have sufficed you.
أَحِينَwas it when خَالفتُI opposed فيكَfor your sake الخلقَhumankind كلَّهُمُall of them
أطعتَyou heeded بِيagainst me واشِياًa slanderer بالهجرِtoward estrangement يُغرِيكَاhe incites you
Was it when I opposed all people for your sake
that you heeded a slanderer against me, urging you to forsake me?
تُصدِّقِyou believe الطيفَthe dream-phantom يَسعىit spreads slander بيagainst me فتهجُرُنيand so you forsake me
وأُكذِبُand I disbelieve العينَthe eye فيماin what عايَنتit saw فيكَاin you
You believe the dream-phantom that slanders me, and so forsake me,
while I disbelieve my own eye about what it has seen in you.

Keep your charms, bestowed especially upon you, unsullied
by what brings disgrace and what your enemy desires.

For a time I silently endured the embers of ghada wood from you,
and thought that accepting injustice would please you.
فماyet ... not نَهاكَdeterred you وَلُوعيmy ardent devotion عنfrom مُبَاعَدتِيkeeping me at a distance

Yet my ardent devotion did not deter you from keeping me at a distance,
nor did my submission turn you from your wrongdoing.

By God, O ban-tree bough bearing a moon,
grant union to one enamored of you, whom your unjust reproaches entice.
يَدنُوhe draws near وهجرُكَand your estrangement يُقْصِيهِkeeps him distant ويُبعدهُand drives him away

He draws near, while your estrangement keeps him distant and drives him away;
and you turn away from him, while longings draw you near.

Drunk with love, he cannot tell whether his intoxication
comes from the magic of your eyes or the wine from your mouth.
