وإنand though لمdid not يدعleave إلاexcept تذكركremembering you الدهرtime
Abodes of love, may your landmarks be blessed,
The abode of love, your landmarks are still alive
Though time has left nothing but remembrance of you.
Even if nothing recalls you but memory through time

I knew you as a horizon of good fortune, and the dwellers
I knew you as a horizon for joy, and dwellers
of your quarters were the radiant stars in your expanses.
Of your meadows were stars and flowers everywhere

فهلso will يرجعنever return ليto me ذلكthat الزمنthe time النضرflourishing
And their days were springtime in its freshness;
And their time was the vigor of spring in its bloom
So will that flourishing time ever return to me?
Will that fresh, verdant era return back to me?
إذاwhen مرpassed فيthrough فكريmy thoughts الديارthe dwellings وأهلهاand their people
فياليthen, alas for me منof وجدlonging يجددهrenews it الذكرremembrance
When the dwellings and their people pass through my thoughts,
Whenever the abode and its people come to mind
Then, oh, the longing that remembrance rekindles in me!
Woe is me! Who finds it can renew the memory?
إذاwhen أوحشتنيmade me desolate وحدتيmy solitude بعدafter فقرهمtheir poverty
ولهتI became distraught كأنيas though I قدalready أصابنيstruck me السحرsorcery
When my solitude makes me desolate after their poverty,
If loneliness distressed me after their loss
I become distraught, as though sorcery has struck me.
I wavered as though magic had struck me down
فكيفso how التأسيconsolation والتأسيwhile consolation فيهمin them
ولاand no عوضsubstitute عنهمfor them ولاnor عنهمwithout them صبرpatience
So how can I find consolation, when consolation lies in them,
How can I find solace? Solace is in them!
And there is no substitute for them, nor patience without them?
No compensation for them, no enduring their loss
لقدindeed ساءنيsaddened me الدهرtime الذيthat سرنيgladdened me بهمwith them
وماand not ظلمواthey did wrong ساؤواthey saddened قصاصاin requital بماfor what سرواthey gladdened
Indeed, the time that gladdened me with them has saddened me;
Ill-fated was the time which delighted me with them
And they did no wrong: they saddened me in requital for the joy they gave.
They did no wrong, but wronged they were, retribution for the joy they brought
