عَتيقٌAtiq كالهلالِlike the crescent moon إذاwhen تَبدَّىappears
عَتيقٌ كالهلالِ إذا تَبدَّى
لسارِيto a night traveler اللّيلِthe night مِنfrom تحتِbeneath الغُيومِthe clouds
لسارِي اللّيلِ مِن تحتِ الغُيومِ
Atiq is like the crescent moon when it appears
Ancient like the crescent moon when it appears
to a night traveler from beneath the clouds.
To the walker at night from beneath the clouds
تقولُyou say إذاwhen بهaround him الأترابُthe age-mates حَفُّواgathered around
تقولُ إذا به الأترابُ حَفُّوا
أهذاis this البدرُthe full moon ما(emphatic particle) بَينَamong النّجومِthe stars
أهذا البدرُ ما بَينَ النّجومِ
You say, when his peers gather around him:
You would say when the nomads gather around it
“Is this the full moon among the stars?”
