مع الثمانين عاث الدهر في جلدي
وساءنيand grieved me ضعفweakness رجليmy leg واضطرابand trembling يديmy hand
وساءني ضعف رجلي واضطراب يدي
At eighty, time has ravaged my strength,
and my leg's weakness and my hand's trembling have grieved me.
إذاwhen كتبتI write فخطيthen my handwriting جدvery مضطربunsteady
إذا كتبت فخطي جد مضطرب
كخطlike the writing of مرتعشtrembling الكفينboth hands مرتعدshaking
كخط مرتعش الكفين مرتعد
When I write, my handwriting is very unsteady,
like the writing of one whose hands tremble and who shakes.
فاعجبso marvel لضعفat the weakness of يديmy hand عنfor حملاcarrying قلماa pen
فاعجب لضعف يدي عن حملا قلما
منfrom بعدafter حطمshattering القناthe spears فيin لبةthe breast of الأسدthe lion
من بعد حطم القنا في لبة الأسد
So marvel that my hand is too weak to carry a pen,
after shattering spears in the lion's breast.
وإنand if مشيتI walk وفيand in كفيmy palm العصاthe staff ثقلتgrows heavy
وإن مشيت وفي كفي العصا ثقلت
رجليmy leg كأنيas though I أخوضwade through الوحلthe mud فيon الجلدthe firm ground
رجلي كأني أخوض الوحل في الجلد
And if I walk, with a staff in my hand, heavy grows
my leg, as though I were wading through mud on firm ground.
فقلso say لمنto whoever يتمنىwishes for طولlength of مدتهhis lifespan
فقل لمن يتمنى طول مدته
هذيthese عواقبconsequences طولlength of العمرlife والمددand spans of time
هذي عواقب طول العمر والمدد
So tell whoever wishes for a long life:
these are the consequences of long life and lengthened years.
