A moon—when, out of passion for him, I reproached him,
He is a moon: when I reproach him out of passionate love for him,
modesty planted a scarlet anemone in his two cheeks.
modesty plants red anemones upon his cheeks.

And it flamed with shyness; were it not for its moisture,
And they blaze with shyness; were it not for their moisture
shimmering within it, it would have become a blaze.
shimmering within them, they would turn to flame.
وازْوَرَّand he turns away عنِّيfrom me مُطرِقاًwith his head bowed فأضلَّنِيso he leaves me lost
أنto أهتديfind my way نحوَtoward السُّلوِّforgetting love طَريقَاa path
He turned away from me, lowering his gaze, and left me unable to find
And he turns away from me, head bowed, leaving me unable
a path leading toward consolation.
to find a path toward forgetting him.
فَليلْحَنيso let him blame me مَنwhoever شاءَwishes فيهِconcerning him فَصَبوَتيfor my infatuation

Let whoever wishes blame me for him; for my yearning,
So let whoever wishes blame me for him, for my infatuation
through love of him, is a drunkenness from which I do not awaken.
with him is an intoxication from which I have not sobered.
