نظمتstrung نفيسprecious الدرthe pearls فيهin it أسطراlines
نظمت نفيس الدر فيه أسطرا
The letter arrived: the ransom is for a thought
The book arrived that redemption is an idea
that strung precious pearls within it in lines.
I strung my pearls into lines within
وفضضتهand I unsealed it عنrevealing جونةa perfume casket فتأرجتthen grew fragrant
وفضضته عن جونة فتأرجت
نفحاتهits fragrant wafts مسكاmusk وفاحتand exhaled fragrance عنبراambergris
نفحاته مسكا وفاحت عنبرا
And I unsealed it, revealing a perfume casket; then
And opened it to inhale fragrance bursting out
its wafts grew fragrant with musk and breathed ambergris.
Its breaths musk and amber scent spreading
وأعدتand I repeated فيهin it تأمليmy contemplation متحيراbewildered
وأعدت فيه تأملي متحيرا
كيفhow استحالturned into اللفظthe wording فيهin it جوهراjewels
كيف استحال اللفظ فيه جوهرا
And I pondered it anew, bewildered:
And I prepared within it my bewildered contemplation
how had the words within it turned into jewels?
How words within transformed into essence
