ونَهاني عن التّصابي المشيبُ
A talebearer left me alone, and a watcher looked away;
The critic has left me alone and looked away,
and gray hair forbade me playing the youth.
And forbidden me from youthful frivolity.

And sixty years showed me my path, though it had
He has shown me the path of moderation in my sixties,
faded, despite being a broad, well-trodden road.
Now gentle, though once impetuous and wild.

And my impetuosity passed, and forbearance fastened for me
My wicked ways are done, and longing binds me
bonds that nothing disquieting can undo.
With a love no suspicion can undo.

And I knew the days through experience, till people surely said:
I've learned from time until people say
"This is the experienced, discerning man."
“This is the wise, experienced man.”

And it pains me that, though I have tested
I regret that though I've lived so long
the times I have lived through, experience has not guided me.
Experience has not guided me.

And when the decrees of fate are fixed, a man errs
When fate decides, one errs in judgment
in judgment where he used to be right.
No matter how right one tries to be.
