كانتْ قطيعَتُهُ جَوابي
A moon—whenever I reproach him,
When I reproach the moon,
his estrangement is the answer I receive.
His silence is my answer.

Ever finding fault, he makes
Though he is never to blame,
me swallow the bitterness of reproach.
He accepts my bitter reproaches,

من وصلِه وعْرَ الطِّلابِ
How often his eyes made easy for me
Easing my eyes with his union,
the arduous quest for union with him,
Despite my demanding gaze.

هذَا التلَّونُ في حِسابي
until I fell, and I had not
Thus I fell for him
reckoned with this fickleness.
Though I never planned to.
