أَتَظُنُّdo you think صَبرَكَyour patience مُنجِداًa helper إِنif أَنْجدُواthey go to Najd
هيهاتَfar from it ليسthere is not لِمُستهامٍfor a love-stricken man مُسعِدُa helper
Do you think your patience a rescuer, if they ascend into Najd?
Do you think your patience will aid you if they go to Najd?
Far from it—no one can aid a lover mad with longing.
Far from it! A love-stricken man has no helper.
إِنّيindeed I لَأَحسَبُI surely think أَنَّthat قَلبَكَyour heart ذَاهِلٌheedless
عمّاof what سَيلقَىit will face فيin غدٍtomorrow أَوor جَلْمَدُa hard rock
Indeed, I can only think your heart is heedless
I do believe that your heart is heedless
of what it will meet tomorrow—or else made of rock.
of what it will face tomorrow—or else a hard rock.
هذاthis الفِراقُparting فإِنso if تُطِقْyou can manage
جَلَداًfortitude فَمِيعادُthen the time of اللقاءِreunion المَوعِدُthe appointed time
This is the parting; so if you can bear it
This is parting; if you can muster
with fortitude, reunion’s tryst is the appointed day.
fortitude, then reunion is set for the appointed time.
قالواthey said غَداًtomorrow لِنَوىfor the departure of الأَحِبَّةِthe loved ones موعدٌan appointed time
والدّهرُand time أجمَعُin its entirety بعدَafter لَيلَتِنَاour night غدُtomorrow
They said: tomorrow is appointed for the beloveds’ departure—
They said, “Tomorrow is the appointed time for the loved ones’ departure.”
yet all of time after this night of ours is “tomorrow.”
And all of time after our night is tomorrow.
فإلامَso how long تَحتَبسُyou hold back الدّموعَthe tears وللنّوىand for parting
ذُخِرَتْthey were stored وأيُّand what ذخيرةٍreserve لاnot تَنفَدُruns out
How long will you hold back tears, when for separation
So how long will you hold back your tears, when for parting
they were stored—and what store does not run dry?
they were stored—and what reserve never runs out?
حمّلتَyou burdened نفسَكyourself ياO ضعيفُweak one مِنَof الهوَىlove
ماthat which لَيسَis not للجَلْدِfor the hardy man الخَلِيِّfree of love بهِwith it يدُpower
You burdened yourself, poor weakling, with a measure of love
You burdened yourself, O weak one, with such love
that even the hardy heart, untouched by passion, cannot bear.
as even the hardy, carefree man has no strength to bear.
وورَدْتَand you came to جَهلاًin ignorance مورداًa watering place لاno مَصدَرٌway out
عنهُfrom it فقدfor indeed ألْهاكَengrossed you ذَاكَthat المورِدُthe watering place
In ignorance you came to a watering place with no departure
And in ignorance you reached a watering place with no escape
from it, for that watering place has utterly engrossed you.
from it; for that watering place has indeed engrossed you.
أَنَّىhow جَسَرْتَyou dared عَلىto الفِراقِparting وأَنتَand you فيin

قُربِnearness الدّيارِthe dwellings بهمbecause of them معنىًّtormented مُكمَدُgrief-stricken
How did you dare to brave separation, when even
How did you dare face parting, when even in
near their dwellings you were love-stricken and grief-crushed?
the vicinity of their dwellings you are tormented by them and grief-stricken?
فارقَتَهُمyou parted from them ثِقَةًtrusting بِصَبرِكَin your patience عنهُمُwithout them
فاصبرْso endure لِنيرانِfor the fires of الأَسَىsorrow ياO مُوقَدُone set aflame
You left them, trusting your patience to endure their absence;
You parted from them, trusting your endurance in their absence;
then endure the fires of sorrow, O you who kindled them!
so endure sorrow’s fires, O you set aflame!
لوif رُضتَyou trained قَلبَكَyour heart فيin الدٌّنُوِّnearness بِهَجرِهِمby shunning them
لعلِمتَyou would have known بعدَafter البَينِparting هلwhether تَتَجلَّدُyou show fortitude
Had you disciplined your heart, while they were near, by shunning them,
Had you trained your heart, while they were near, by shunning them,
you would have known, once parted, whether you could stand firm.
you would have known, after parting, whether you could endure.
