لمَّاwhen رأيتُI saw صروفَvicissitudes هَthis (first part of هذا)
لمَّا رأيتُ صروفَ هَ
ذاthis (completion of هذا) الدَّهرِage تلعبُplays بالبَراياwith humankind
ذا الدَّهرِ تلعبُ بالبَرايا
When I saw the vicissitudes of this
When I saw the turns of fate
age playing with humankind,
Playing with mortals,
يَعلوrises بهاthrough them هذاthis one وَيَهْand falls (first part of ويهبط)
يَعلو بها هذا وَيَهْ
بِطُfalls (completion of يهبط) ذاthat one وقَصْرُهُمُand their ultimate end المَناياdeaths
بِطُ ذا وقَصْرُهُمُ المَنايا
this one rises through them, while
Raising one up and casting another down,
that one falls, and death is their ultimate end;
And their palaces destroyed by death,
ورأيتُهand I saw it مُسترجِعاًreclaiming
ورأيتُه مُسترجِعاً
نَزْرَa scant amount المواهِبِgifts والعَطاياand bounties
نَزْرَ المواهِبِ والعَطايا
and saw it reclaiming
And I saw it taking back
its scant gifts and bounties,
The gifts and favors it had given,
مُتغايرَchangeable الأحوالِconditions مُخْdiffering (first part of مختلف)
مُتغايرَ الأحوالِ مُخْ
تَلِفَdiffering (completion of مختلف) الضرائِبِnatural temperaments والسَّجَاياand dispositions
تَلِفَ الضرائِبِ والسَّجَايا
changeable in its conditions,
Changing conditions,
differing in its natures and dispositions;
Varying fortunes and trials,
لاno نعمةٌblessing فيهِin it تدوlasts (first part of تدوم)
لا نعمةٌ فيهِ تدو
مُlasts (completion of تدوم) ولاnor تدومُlasts بهin it البَلاياafflictions
مُ ولا تدومُ به البَلايا
no blessing in it
No blessing in it lasts,
lasts, nor do afflictions last in it—
Nor do afflictions endure,
لمdid not أغْتَبِطْI rejoice فيهin it بفاat a gain (first part of بفائدة)
لم أغْتَبِطْ فيه بفا
ئِدةٍgain (completion of فائدة) ولمand did not أخشَI fear الرّزاياcalamities
ئِدةٍ ولم أخشَ الرّزايا
I took no delight there in any
I took no pride in its boons
gain, nor did I fear calamities.
Nor feared its calamities.
