إنif كانwas عندهمin their view وقدand indeed ظنواthey supposed
إن كان عندهم وقد ظنوا
أناthat we نقيمwe stay فبئسthen how wretched ماwhat ظنواthey supposed
أنا نقيم فبئس ما ظنوا
If it is their belief—and they have supposed—
If they believed, though falsely deemed,
that we shall stay—what a wretched supposition!
That I would settle, how wrongly they dreamed!
واسترهنواand they took as a pledge قلبيmy heart فواthen oh! عجبيmy astonishment
واسترهنوا قلبي فوا عجبي
الذينthose who ليbelonging to me وفؤاديand my heart الرهنthe pledge
الذين لي وفؤادي الرهن
And they took my heart in pledge—oh, my astonishment!
When my heart they took as their pawn,
Those who are mine, while my heart is the pledge.
My wonder at those to whom it was drawn!
