I fell in love with you in the carefree ease of youth,
You captivated my love in the prime of youth,
So I said: when gray hair reaches its fullness, this love will end.
And I said, "When old age comes, it will fade."

وست مضت لي صبوة وتتيما
Yet my gray hair has visited me, and ninety years
But ninety pilgrimages have visited me,
And six have passed for me in yearning and love's enthrallment,
And six years of my youth have passed, lonely.

يزين هوانا عفة وتكرما
Through remembrance of a union that was free of suspicion,
With the memory of a union free from doubt
Adorning our love with chastity and noble conduct:
That adorned our love with chastity and nobility,

With a glance of an eye or the coolness of a greeting,
With a glance of the eye or a cool greeting
Sweeter than clear water to the thirsty,
Sweeter than pure water to the thirsty.

And an exchange of chaste speech that you would deem,
And a conversation in a chastity that imagines it,
When the ear takes it in, a string of pearls.
If the ear comprehends it, a string of pearls.

فلت الليالي أسعفتني صروفها

وردت زمانا بالسرور تقدما
If only the nights' vicissitudes would favor me,
The nights have passed, lending me their circumstances,
And restore a time that once passed in joy.
And time has returned with happiness progressing.
