يُعلّلُني بعدَ الأحبّةِ دَاهِرُ
It is sorrow enough that I dwell in a town
Enough sorrow that I dwell in a land
where Dāhir consoles me after my loved ones are gone.
Where, after loved ones, a vagrant consoles me,

He tells me, from what his mind gathers,
Telling me of whatever his mind can gather,

Indeed, the age we live in has turned away;
The days have certainly gone by when
so may death within it be watered and tended.

Captivity among Turks and Byzantines,
Now we are captives amid Turks and Byzantines,
and the loss of loved ones, and companions scattered afar.
Having lost loved ones and boon companions.
