غَرضتُ من الهِجران والشملُ جامعٌ

ولم يتعمّدْنَا بفُرقَتِنا الدّهرُ

ولم يتعمّدْنَا بفُرقَتِنا الدّهرُ

I grew weary of estrangement while we were still together,

Separation or reunion, fate decrees the same end;

and Time had not singled us out for separation.

Our parting was no willful act to offend.

فلمّا تفرّقنا وشطّت بنا النّوَى

فلمّا تفرّقنا وشطّت بنا النّوَى

تمنّيتُ لو دامَ التّجاوُرُ والهجرُ

تمنّيتُ لو دامَ التّجاوُرُ والهجرُ

Then, when we parted and distance carried us far away,

But now that far apart we dwell, and yearnings rend

I wished that nearness and estrangement had endured.

My heart, I wish we still were neighbors, e'en as friends.
