O you who blame me for standing like one seeking refuge,

on the dwelling's open grounds, shod with embers,

I turn my grit-sore eye about, seeking to recognize it.

By your life, the house at al-Zahir that

I passed but did not visit fills me with longing.

My heart resumes its folly when it sees it,

    ويَسْفَحُ فيه مَدْمَعي مُسْتَهِلَّهُ

    and there takes on the affair's hard and easy parts;

and there my eye pours forth its streaming tears.

And indeed, my passing by without speaking to its people

is harsher than the death that I shall taste.

And in that house, from which I keep away

for fear of the tribe's talebearers, dwells a pale doe with a fawn.

Love for her is earnest with souls, while she jests.

And at the valley bend in upper al-Junayna stands a dwelling,

spacious, yet my breast's sorrow is cramped within it.

I shall proclaim—for one sick in the chest must cough forth—

the sickness of a love that grips the ribs.

My patience swears to me to bear it, then breaks its oath.

And what might the talebearers possibly say

except that I am in love with you?

A chaste passion, untainted by suspicion,

as Qays loved Lubna, and as Tawba loved.

I say, though the talebearer has arrows that strike true:

Yes, the talebearers spoke truly: you are beloved

to me, though your ways have not been kind.

I shall bow to the dream-vision that visits with your reproaches,

and press my cheek to your dust among the dwellings.

And always, whether you are far away or near,

night gathers around me the limbs of love for you,

as gussets join together the edges of a shirt.

It is the dwelling—who will let me smell its dust,

and weep for our nights there and how they changed,

and the tawny lances there that bar foes from her tents?

As though upon her teeth lay wine, mingled

with dew-water from the night's last hours by an evening drinker.

They have gone far—may their chosen course bring them near, may it!—

with a sun that robed herself in pitch-darkness at noon,

as though a garden had breathed by night within her mouth.

And I tasted it only with my eye, gazing intently,

    as a lightning-flash from a cloud's summit is watched.
